The Berenstain Bears are based on the book series created by children's authors Stan and Jan Berenstain. Later their son Mike became involved with the work. The animated children's TV series is a hand drawn 2D creation produced by Southern Star Productions and debuted on NBC in 1985. Two 11-minute stores were featured per episode. Later a new series was launched on PBS Kids in 2003. Originally the Berenstain Bears starred in a series of five NBC holiday specials produced from 1979-1983. The show is targeted toward school aged children and introduces topics families deal with on a regular basis between parents and children.
Most stories are set in Bear Country, a peacful fictional society composed entirely of bears. Story lines typically follow the Bear family as they deal with topics relevant to both children and parents.
Inspiration came from the Berenstains' sons, Leo and Mike, who were learning to read and spawned their first book called The Big Honey Hunt, which was first published in 1962 and edited by Dr Seuss himself. They both started their own book line in 1974 where a daughter was introduced as Sister Bear in The Berenstain Bears and the New Baby. Subsequently Small Bear, as he was known, became Brother Bear. Then in 2000, The Berenstain Bears and Baby Makes Five brings us little baby Honey Bear and deals with a new life and pregnancy. A reader contest was developed to name the little cub.
Trivia: The series has drawn some criticism of Papa Bear being portrayed as a bumbling, inept father. Stan Berenstain said in 1991, "Papa and Mama are roughly modeled after us; I'm not quite as dumb as he seems to be sometimes, and Jan is not quite as wise and patient as Mama, but she is Mama." Lee Ann Womack sings the new Berenstain Bears theme song. Feel free to look around a bit.
Meet the Family!
Papa Bear is the world's foremost authority on everything; often wrong but never a doubt in his mind. He is a woodsbear and rough carpenter ... very rough.
Mama Bear is the president of the Bear Country Garden Club and is a champion quiltmaker. Mama's favorite recipe is honey cured salmon. Brother and Sister's messy room keeps her busy.
Brother Bear is a big fan of soccer and likes to play sports. He enjoys models of airplanes and dinosaurs and does icky things that boys do.
Sister Bear is a whirling cloud of energy. Her favorite color is pink, and her favorite doll is her Bearbie. Did we mention her life goal is to jump rope 1000 times?
Honey Bear is just as sweet as she can be.
